Guidelines for International Collaborative Research Grants for Young Investigators

[1] The Program
International Collaborative Research Grants provide support for promising young scholars to enhance their research capabilities through the establishment of international research collaborations.
[2] Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
1) Applicant must be an employee of Kumamoto University and a member of a laboratory participating in the AIDS gCOE program.
2) Applicant must be 41 years old or younger and within ten years of receiving the doctoral degree at the time of submission deadline. Exceptions to this policy will be considered for renewal grants.
3) Previous or preliminary data generated through a pre-established international collaboration are an essential part of a grant application. Application submission for new projects should wait until compelling preliminary studies are finished.
[3] Application and Review Procedure
Applicants must discuss the proposed projects with their international collaborators in advance. Senior mentors should not be directly involved in the application preparation although applicants may seek general advice. The Application Form must be prepared in English.

Applications will be evaluated by the External Scientific Advisory Committee. Eligible applications will be forwarded to the AIDS gCOE Grant Review Board for the final decision. Applicants may be called for an interview prior to the final decision.

International Collaborative Research Young Investigator Grants provide support for a period of one year and are renewable for up to two years. Applications are called for once a year in April. A maximum of three Grants will be available each year; however, contingent upon availability of funds and scientific merit of the applications, more grants may be awarded. If the Program does not receive a sufficient number of meritorious applications, a second solicitation may be announced.

[4] Award Provisions and Expenditures
Awards are as much as JPY5,000,000 per year to be used for research supplies and other specific research-related expenses as approved by the AIDS gCOE Board.

Funds are primarily designed to cover the research conducted in Japan. Permission should be requested for the research performed outside of Japan.

Grants provide funds for such items as:
  1. International travel by the grant recipients and their collaborators, which is needed specifically for the performance of their collaborative research (not including travel to attend scientific meetings)
  2. Research supplies and equipment necessary for international research collaborations
  3. Salary support for personnel working on the proposed project
  4. Other research expenses approved by the AIDS gCOE Board.
[5] Reporting Requirements
Project reports (Continuous) are to be submitted in Annual Report of the application form, “YI-appli_report 01[ Word / PDF]”. Project reports (Final Fiscal Year) are to be submitted in the form, “YI-Report02 [ Word / PDF]” by the end of fiscal year. The recipient will be invited to present their work in English at the gCOE international seminar or the AIDS seminar in the following year.
