n July 2025, Prof. Takamasa Ueno, Director of the Joint Research Center for Human Retrovirus Infection visited Professor Sarah L Rowland-Jones from the University of Oxford in the UK. Professor Rowland-Jones is a renowned researcher in the fields of HIV immunology and global health, and her outstanding contributions have been recognized worldwide.
For over 10 years, Professor Rowland-Jones has significantly contributed to Kumamoto University’s international collaboration in education and research as an Excellence Professor at the International Research Center for Medical Sciences (IRCMS) and the Joint Research Center for Human Retrovirus Infection. Her contributions have played a vital role in strengthening Kumamoto University’s international research network.
Moreover, she has made notable achievements in researcher development, cooperating in joint symposia and hosting young researchers and graduate students from Kumamoto University. With her support, many students and researchers have broadened their international perspectives and achieved great success in their research activities.
As a Liaison Professor, Professor Rowland-Jones is expected to continue playing a central role in contributing to the development of Kumamoto University’s international research network and enhancing the university’s global presence.
The Liaison Professor program was established in the 2023 academic year as part of the university’s global strategy to strengthen and expand international networks. This title is awarded to alumni, former faculty, and researchers who have made significant contributions to the internationalization of Kumamoto University’s education and research. Professor Rowland-Jones is one of the key figures in this initiative and has played a major role in its success.
